Getting your child off to a good start in preschool is important for his/her self-confidence now and throughout life.
Here are some suggestions for orientation:
- Visit the Academy prior to the first day of school to meet the teacher and to introduce your child to meet their new environment.
- Talk about the length of time your child will be away from you and how he/she will get to the Academy and home again.
- When it is time to say “Good-bye for now”, do it quickly, firmly, and cheerfully. Don’t sneak out. By leaving quickly and confidently, after saying good-bye, you leave your child with reassurance that the choice you have made for his/her care is appropriate.
- Take time to talk with your child when he/she wants to tell you about new friends, his/her teacher and the happenings of the day.
- If a child is having difficulty separating from you, arrange to have another adult bring the child to school in the morning.
- Understand that it is normal for your child to go through a period of adjustment. This behavior is usually a normal part of a child’s growth in learning to accept change and being away from home.
- Convey a positive attitude about preschool. If you are enthusiastic and happy about this new experience, your child is more likely to be also.
